The Business Unit Manager is responsible for leading all aspects of a production area within ASI Southeast including safety, quality, delivery, and cost performance. Each business unit operates as a small business within the larger plant, and the manager serves as its “owner,” ensuring the safety of the team and that the runs efficiently, meets customer expectations, and continuously improves.
Scope
The Business Unit Manage is expected to be involved with all aspects of their team’s business coordinating and facilitating the success of the business. They may also be asked to help in other areas such as supplier issues or customer concerns. The Business Unit Manager may also be required to fill in for or substitute for the Plant Manager from time to time.
KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Provide a culture that will allow your team to meet safety, quality, and delivery goals
- Maintain a safe working environment at all times.
- Plan, coordinate and organize daily workflow to ensure customer orders are met.
- Partner with maintenance, materials, and scheduling to keep operations running smoothly.
- Identify and drive opportunities for process improvement and waste reduction.
- Foster a positive, team-oriented work environment.
- Communicate clearly with leadership and team members about goals, challenges, and progress.
- Monitor and manage key performance indicators (KPIs) for the business unit, including output, scrap, downtime, and labor utilization.
- Foster strong communication and alignment between departments, including customer service, materials, and shipping.
- Conduct regular team meetings to communicate goals, progress, and expectations.
- Support/encourage training and development plans to grow team capability and engagement.
- Lead by example and uphold ASI’s core values of integrity, teamwork, and continuous improvement.
- Ensure adequate staffing levels, scheduling, and training to meet operational needs.
- Identify and nurture high-potential talent through ongoing feedback, performance reviews, and succession planning.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
WORK EXPERIENCE AND REQUIREMENTS
- Education: Bachelor’s preferred plus 3 years in a manufacturing management role.
- or High School Diploma and demonstrated experience of a minimum 5 years in a leadership role in a manufacturing setting with a proven track record of managing groups or teams of people on a daily basis.
- Experience: Minimum 3 years in a manufacturing management role; 5+ years in a manufacturing environment preferred.
- Certifications: Lean/TPS knowledge required; Lean Six Sigma Green Belt preferred.
SKILLS
- Proven leadership and ability to manage front-line leaders and staff.
- Advanced problem-solving and organizational skills
- Strong communication and organization skills.
- Experience in managing KPIs or P&Ls
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Organized, self-starter with strong people leadership skills
- Ability to coach, motivate and hold themselves and others accountable
PHYSICAL DEMANDS/REQUIREMENTS
- This position requires a moderate to high degree of standing, walking, stooping or kneeling, close eye work, reaching, pulling or pushing. Good hand dexterity, hearing, and vision are considered essential. A moderate to high degree of repetitive motions using right, left, or both hands and/or feet may also be required. Requires wearing personal protective equipment. Requires working indoors in environmentally non-controlled conditions.
